Scarisbrick Hall fences at the Liverpool NWJS tournament.
Scarisbrick Hall’s fencing club competed in the first event of the 2017 North West Junior Series at Liverpool College on Saturday (20th May). The school fielded four competitors: Annabelle Montagu and Grace Michell in the under 13 girls epee; James Hughes in the under 13 boys epee and Alex Montagu in the under 15 boys epee.
The tournament started with the mixed poules. Despite this being the first public competition for Alex, Annabelle and James, they all held their nerve under the added pressure of tournament conditions to give excellent performances with the Scarisbrick fencers dominating the results, finishing in three of the top four positions. Special mentions go to Alex for being the only fencer to beat the top seed; James for holding the top seed to a 3-3 tie and Grace for finishing in second seed position.

In the direct eliminations the pupils performed magnificently securing three gold and one bronze in their respective age categories. Particular credit goes to Annabelle who had to win against seed in the girl’s semi-final against Grace to progress to the final which she won in commanding fashion. Alex and James also did the school proud by bringing home the under 15 and under 13 boy’s gold medals respectively.
On the day their support was boosted by Lindsey Hogg, an old girl of the school, who was fencing in the Liverpool Open ladies sabre event being held at the same venue. She came over to congratulate our team members after the medal presentation and wish them well in their fencing careers.
Further congratulations go to Josh Porter-Lightwood, Fin Parker, Evie Day, Harry Boardman, James Hughes and Grace Michell who have just passed their British Academy of Fencing bronze awards after two terms of hard work in the gym!
The school club would like to thank Liverpool Fencing club and Rebekah Edwards for their generosity in loaning us the competition grade equipment that enabled these pupils to compete on the day. We would also like to thank the school fencing master, David Stobbs, for his dedicated coaching work that makes all of these achievements possible.
