Sharon Thompson from Southport, together with her Husband Neil, are holding a special event full of live entertainment at this amazing venue featuring Merseyside bands and an auction to raise mucj needed funds for Dementia UK.
Sharon’s mum, Gladys has lived with vascular dementia for 9 years and initially remained at home in her own environment with the family for many years after the onset of her condition. Sharon cared for Gladys throughout this time with the much valued help of home care, enabling her to continue with her full time job. However, 3 years ago, as Gladys’s condition rapidly progressed and she developed mobility problems and limited capabilities, the time came for her to move into 24 hour care.
Sharon said, “I’m very proud to say, mum has taken every stage of her dementia in her stride. Now beginning her final stages of the condition, a journey with no fixed time span, she has trouble speaking and swallowing and is now bed bound, but can still muster a beautiful smile for those she loves. It’s a heartbreaking time for the family and a very difficult time for mum. So we’ve decided to do something positive and arrange this special event to give something back for the endless support we have received over the years. Although we had assistance from many arms of the support networks out there, I used Dementia UK’s website and asked them for advice on many occasions whilst researching the condition, so I therefore chose them as our charity to benefit from the proceeds. Hangar 34 is an amazing venue with a capacity of 500 people and we intend to pack it out. We have managed to sign up some great local bands for the night with music from local indie bands Pigshoes, The Left backs and RnB/rock n roll band The Extras, all ready to give everyone a great night to remember. During the evening we are very grateful to be also holding an auction of specially signed merchandise from The Undertones, Steve Diggle and Buzzcocks, The Skids, Hugh Cornwell, John Cooper Clarke and the Stereophonics. They have all been very generous.”
