The latest visit by Richard Alston Dance Company brings a diverse programme that features the duet Mazur danced to Chopin’s Mazurka’s, the dramatic fast-paced Stronghold and the light and lyrical Brisk Singing. The company of 10 highly talented athletic dancers delight in this highly musical evening of dance.
Created especially for the Company’s At Home Season at The Place in 2015 Mazur is set to Chopin’s Mazurkas, played live by Jason Ridgway. Mazur is a dance for two friends sharing what they love and what they have lost. For Chopin and his friends what was lost was Poland, the country to which they could not return.
Set to an explosive score by Pulitzer Prize Winner Julia Wolfe, Martin Lawrance’s Stronghold sees all ten dancers cut through the space with intense gusto to electrify the stage. It is a fiercely intense work reflecting the turbulent character of the music, richly scored for eight double basses.
Brisk Singing celebrates the music of Jean Phillippe Rameau, genius of the French baroque. Alston has revived this uplifting dance for eight dancers, carried along by the warmth and lightness of spirit in Rameau’s music.
