A cold afternoon in Kidderminster ended in a 1-0 victory for Southport as Devarn Green snatched the winner.
The winger’s 73rd minute goal was a rare chance in a game that had few clear goal scoring opportunities for both sides.
After back to back league defeats prior to this match, Liam Watson will be pleased to take the points back North and return to winning ways.
The early exchanges saw very little goal mouth action, with Charlie Albinson making an easy save from a Sam Austin effort from the edge of the box.
Southport’s opportunities to score were also restricted early on, with Brad Bauress putting a free kick straight into the wall and Marcus Wood curling a shot over Will Mannion’s goal.
Albinson was called into action again just before the half hour mark, as he got down low to stop a drilled effort by Declan Weeks.
The Port keeper continued to keep the scores level, first pushing a curling effort by Hemmings wide of the target in the 36th minute, before making a great stop to ensure Ashley Chambers’ header didn’t sneak in.
Liam Waton’s side had a few half chances just before the break with Zehn Mohammed having an effort deflected wide and Ryan Astles having a tame header easily caught by the keeper.
Just after the break Russell Benjamin came close, as his superb hit half volley on the edge of the box produced an excellent save by Mannion.
Both teams had further half chances, with Albinson stopping a tame shot by Hemmings for the home team, before Bauress had a header deflected over.
Things continued to be tight and chances continued to be scarce, as Devarn Green had a rare shot in the box, with Mannion easily saving the attempt.
Then in the 73rd minute, the dead lock was broken as Devarn Green continued his great scoring form to make it 0-1, flicking a Jack Sampson cross past the keeper.
As the home side searched for an equaliser, the Port remained strong defensively and denied any clear chances.
In the final moments of the game, Sam Austin tried his luck from the edge of the box, but slotted his effort wide of the right post as the match ended 0-1 to Southport.
