Restaurant review: Rueters Bar and Grill, Hoghton Street, Southport

The first thing that strikes you about the all new look Rueters Bar and Grill is the unrecognisable interior.

You’re immediately taken aback by the incredible hard work of new owners Sinclair and Laura d’Albuquerque – previously of the Bold Churchtown, and if you didn’t know better, you’d think the Hoghton Street restaurant was totally new.

Such is the testament of the huge renovation work that both Laura and Sinclair have carried out in the last few months to bring Reuters into the 21st century.

With them they have brought top chefs from some of the biggest kitchens in Merseyside, a committed and endlessly polite staff and a menu that would not look amiss at a top City brasserie!

Their head chef, former PanAm genius Nick Boswell, heads up the kitchen.

My guest and I are given the warmest of welcomes as we take our seats in a snug little corner of the restaurant, just yards from the totally revamped bar – now awash with white wood panelling, warm lighting and a well stocked array of drinks from wines to real ales!

Their hot drink selection for those hearty shoppers looking to escape the cold is not to be sniffed at either!

We order two wines  – well it is Christmas after all! – and settle in for a lovely afternoon of fine dining.

I ponder over the starters and eventually settle on a rather nice peri peri dusted calamari platter. My guest – a lover of the sweeter things – decides she’s saving herself for the chocolate brownie she’s spotted on the desert list!

Well that was lovely! The calamari was dusted with enough peri peri to cause me to consider ordering a milk – just the way I like it. It’s important to note that as all meals are prepared fresh you can order to taste so if you want it less or more spicy, just ask!

My date was rather worried about the speed that I ate my calamari, such was its deliciousness.

Right, let me at the main course!

Mains:

We both opted for burgers – I the Cajun chicken while my date plumped for the cheeseburger with spicy relish.

It’s the sides which steal the show here. Crispy fried onions are an excellent edition to both burgers and my date was delighted with the homemade spicy tomato relish. The only thing missing was a brioche bun, but that’s just me being picky! My empty plate at the end is more than enough sign that I enjoyed my Cajun chicken burger.

My guest left but a few of her sweet potato fries, her eyes still transfixed on the chocolate brownie for desert…

Sweets:

I was planning to write this review as I ate but fear of missing out on some delicious Cheshire farm white chocolate ice cream sundae was too much!

My date throughly enjoyed her brownie and ice cream, evidently delighted she’d chosen to save herself for the sweet treat. She’s already asking me when we can come back for more!

Overall the brand new Rueters is a fantastic venture as a bar and grill and is destined to find its way back to the top of the Southport restaurant scene!
