Proposals to transform the ‘embarrassing’ rail approach to Southport Station are on track, according to campaigners.

Christine McGregor, a founding member of Southport Rail Transport Forum and the chair of Southport Station Improvement Project, has been behind efforts to encourage Network Rail to clean up the neglected land which ‘greets’ rail passengers as they head into the resort.

She revealed that the approach by train into Southport Station was described as ‘the worst in the UK’ in 2015 by one of the southern rail franchise bidders who was visiting Southport.

But work is now underway to clear rail debris and remove unsightly overgrowth.

Christine said: “Regular rail commuters and visitors to Southport will know that the track-side approach to Southport Station has long been a source of embarrassment and disgust due to many years of neglect.
