The chairman of the Southport Rail Transport Forum has revealed that he has polled rail users to discover whether they would prefer to keep the connection between Southport and Manchester Piccadilly – or lose the much-maligned Pacers.
Eric Woodcock ran the poll of 120 participants on the Forum’s page on social media site Facebook – and the vast majority, 98%, voted to keep the rail connection.
He ran the poll as in less than three months’ time the direct train services from Southport and West Lancashire to Manchester Piccadilly are expected to be cut as part of rail company Northern’s plans to ‘transform’ rail travel in the North West.
Meanwhile, Northern is trumpeting the news that they are replacing the old Pacer units by the end of next year with a brand new fleet of trains built in Spain. None of them will be allocated to Southport routes.
