Southport bounced back from their first league defeat since October with victory over Marine midweek in the cup; now Liam Watson’s side will hope to resume winning ways in the National League North against Telford.
The defeat last Saturday against Altrincham would’ve been a weird feeling for a side that has been unbeaten for so long.
Prior to the game at Moss Lane, the Port hadn’t lost a league game since the 27th October at home against Blyth Spartans.
From there Watson’s side went on a superb run of form, particularly finding their edge over Christmas and New Year.
Despite losing to the Robins there is no reason why Southport can’t continue their fantastic rise up the table.
A win midweek over Marine in the Liverpool cup would’ve been a great confidence booster; but this weekends opponents, Telford, will be a much sterner test.
The Bucks enter this game sitting in the playoff places in 5th, and eight points ahead of Southport.
Watson will be hoping his side will be able to close the gap between them and the playoff spots though.
They come up against Telford at what could be a good time, as they enter this game on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Kidderminster last weekend.
None the less, prior to that defeat The Lillywhites had been in good form at the back end of 2018 and the start of the new year.
Their biggest victory during that time was a 4-1 win over Leamington, that saw them finish 2018 on a high.
The key player for Gavin Cowan’s has been striker Daniel Udoh, who has 11 goals so far in the league.
The Nigerian forward was also on target in his sides 2-1 victory over higher division opponents, Hartlepool, in the FA Trophy to put them through to the second round.
Another attacking threat for Southport to deal with will be Amari Morgan-Smith, who was on target when the pair met earlier on in the season.
The 1-0 opening day defeat to Telford got the season off to the worst possible start for the lads in Old Gold.
A further three defeats would follow before Southport finally got their first win of the season.
Their was much hope at the start of the season; it took a while to finally come to fruition but now, despite defeat last, Southport can go into any match expecting something.
