Kevin Davies’ stint as Southport manager begins with the visit of Gainsborough Trinity this today.
The former England striker will be hoping to lead his new charges to a first point in five league games and end their six game losing streak in all competitions.
Gainsborough sit second bottom of the National League North, but shocked leaders Harrogate Town last weekend by beating them 2-1 away from home, sealing their place in the first round of the FA Cup in the process.
Their league form is also impressive of late, having gained seven points from their last three games.
The Sandgrounders cannot, therefore, look at this as a simple assignment just by glancing at the league table.
Southport were unfortunate in their last outing against Spennymoor Town, and looked far more solid with the highly impressive Ross Sykes, barring one crucial error, looking a good signing.
If the Sandgrounders can repeat their performance without the ball, and add some potency in attack, then the result to end their barren run is surely on the way.
