PREVIEW | Southport V Bradford Park Avenue

1st February 2020

Southport will be looking to make it back-to-back wins as they welcome bottom placed side Bradford (Park Avenue) to the Pure Stadium this weekend.

After claiming their first league win in over a month, Liam Watson’s side will be targeting a second league double of the season as they aim to get their quest for a play-off place back on track.

Meanwhile for this weekend’s opponents, Bradford, their season could very well be over already, as they will need a significant change in results to avoid relegation.

With only three victories all season, the Avenue currently sit in 22nd place and 13 points from safety, having also played more games than the teams around them.

The last victory in the Vanarama National League North for Mark Bower’s side came at the start of December, as they beat Altrincham 2-0.

Since then they have lost seven and drawn one, with the heaviest defeat being 5-0 away to Farsley Celtic.

Last time out they were away to Alty at Moss Lane, with Phil Parkinson’s side coming away 2-0 winners to extend the Avenue’s poor run.

The problems in both attack and defence are equally concerning, as they hold the worst record in the league in both categories, scoring only 18 and conceding 72.

Three of the goals against them came in the last meeting between the pair at the Horsfall Stadium back in October.

David Morgan’s sweet long ranged effort was one to remember in the 3-0 Port victory, with Ryan Astles and Devarn Green also on the scoresheet.

With Bradford a far cry from their playoff form last season, Southport will not want to slip up in a game that could boost their top seven hopes.
