Southport kicked off 2019 with a positive point away to rivals Chester and will now look to improve on that as Nuneaton Borough visit the Merseyrail Community Stadium on Saturday 5 January (3pm KO).
The last time the Port lost in the league was way back in October. Since then Liam Watson has energised his squad to produce an excellent run of form which has continued over the busy Christmas period.
Meanwhile this weekend’s opponents, Nuneaton, have fallen away from the rest of the division, currently sitting rock bottom and six points off Ashton United in 21st place.
The Boro have the second worst defence in the league, shipping 53 goals so far this campaign.
A long with a low scoring front line, manager Jimmy Ginnelly’s side have the worst goal difference in the division.
The 55-year old took over at the start of December after the club parted ways with temporary boss Lee Fowler.
The last time these two sides met in the league, it was former Leicester under 21’s coach, Nicky Eden, at the helm.
It was an awful day for the Boro, as Southport recorded a 4-1 victory in mid-August.
That victory was much-needed at the time, beginning the season with four straight defeats.
The sides go into Saturday’s game with completely different circumstances, with Southport looking more comfortable now in 15th place.
It is in fact Nuneaton who is entering the fixture this time on the back of a four game winless run.
A problem in the two previous games, against Brackley and Telford, is they have lost both despite taking the lead initially.
The star for Nuneaton this season has been Dior Angus, who has nine goals this campaign and will be the biggest threat to Southport.
This match is one on recent form Southport should be confident with, but definitely shouldn’t take lightly, as three more vitals points are on offer.
