PREVIEW | Quick Turnaround

26th August 2019

Southport will be hoping to recover from Saturday’s 1-0 defeat as they prepare to travel to Alfreton Town on Monday afternoon.

The Port didn’t begin the Bank Holiday schedule in the way Liam Watson would’ve hoped, as Andre Brown’s penalty gave AFC Telford the win at the Pure Stadium.

The loss makes it back-to-back defeats for the Port, a run they won’t want to continue after starting the season with four unbeaten games.

Meanwhile Monday’s opponents, Alfreton, head into the match hoping to make it three wins on the bounce.

The Port defence will have to be alert if they hope to come away from the Impact Arena with anything, with the Reds in great goal scoring form in the last few weeks.

They have produced a 3-0 win over Blyth Spartans, a 4-0 win over Bradford (Park Avenue) and most recently a 4-2 victory over Guiseley in their three wins this campaign, making them a side with a strong attacking threat.

In that time Alfreton have had six different scorers, with Amari Morgan-Smith leading the way the four goals.

He is followed by Danny Clarke with three, whilst Bobby Johnson and Josh Thacker with two apiece.

Despite being joint top scorers in the Vanarama National League North, with 14 goals, Billy Heath’s side can still be matched by Southport.

Two of their big victories have come against two of the strugglers in the league, who have regularly suffered big defeats this campaign.

Meanwhile they have also lost twice and drawn once, showing that they can be contained and outscored.

When the pair met last season, both teams won at their home grounds, with Southport hoping to get a victory on the road this time round in order to return to winning ways.
