PREVIEW | Eyes On The Tigers

7th December 2019

Southport will be looking to make it back-to-back league wins as they welcome Gloucester City to the Pure Stadium.

Devarn Green’s goal was the difference for Liam Watson’s side in the 0-1 victory away to Kidderminster last week, and the Port will by looking to build on that heading into the festive period.

Opponents, Gloucester, enter this game without a win since the middle of October, when they beat Bradford (Park Avenue) 1-0 at the Jubilee Stadium.

Their last three games in Vanarama National League North have all ended in draws, as they look to discover a winning edge.

Prior to that they suffered a humbling 5-1 defeat away to Spennymoor Town.

Shipping goals has been a problem for James Rowe’s side, conceding 35 goals so far this campaign, with only the bottom two having a worse defensive record.

In attack they have been stronger than Southport, scoring three more goals with 28.

A key member of the Tigers’ strikeforce is Joe Hanks, who has ten goals so far this campaign.

Last year’s key man Fabian Robert was on target in the last game, and ten goals in 23 games last season demonstrates that he could also be a danger.

The last time Southport faced the Tigers was during the 2009/10 season – one that proved to be a title-winning campaign for Watson’s side.

The home game against Gloucester on the opening day of that season was not only memorable for a 3-2 win, but also saw a long-awaited first goal in a Southport shirt for Earl Davis.

The big defender’s second-half strike saw him open his Port account after more than five years and three spells with the club, earning Trust in Yellow £200 in sponsorship in the process.

Watson will be hoping for a similar display as his current side look to compete for the play-off spots.
