Pop music takes the top spot as the most listened to genre in England

22nd November 2022

Unsurprisingly, pop music is a genre of music that goes down a treat with the masses. However, this has now been confirmed by a recent study conducted by the online bingo site Jackpotjoy, which breaks down popular artists and their genres across the UK. Without further ado, let’s dive into a pop breakdown…

A look at England’s relationship with music

England has birthed some of the greatest talents on the planet. Think classic bands or artists like The Beatles, Elton John and The Rolling Stones. Not to mention sensational girl groups of the noughties, from The Spice Girls to Girls Aloud. The trend continues with modern-day artists, such as Ed Sheeran, Adele and Ellie Goulding. Pop music may have evolved over the years, weaving in various influences of R&B, rock and more, but the premise is still the same – pop artists create feel-good music that catches on.

From pop to indie

When we take a deeper dive into the evolution of pop music, it’s clear to see that its interpretation is very different to how it was back in the 1960s, when its origins brought in elements of rock, which is very different to modern-day examples. There are indie traces in ‘As It Was’ by Harry Styles as well as rap and R&B influences in ‘Woman’ by Little Simz for example. Music sites such as Spotify categorise music based on these influences, showcasing just how broadly mixed modern-day pop songs can be.

Merseyside and the North

With the success of pop over the years, it would be wrong not to acknowledge Liverpool as the birthplace of this musical revolution. The Beatles were scousers through-and-through and they rocked their way through the decades with hits like ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Here Comes The Sun’. People still enjoy their songs today. Other artists born in the North of England include Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, who was born in Sheffield, as well as James Arthur, who grew up in North Yorkshire.

The battle for the top spot in London

As you can imagine, lots of pop artists were born in London, an almighty hub for musical talent. Dua Lipa, Amy Winehouse and David Bowie are among the list. One of the most vocal pop artists who preach their love for London is Adele, who grew up in Tottenham. She started her career at the BRIT School, before securing 12 BRIT Awards herself over the years.

With such a huge variety of talent in one city, the types of pop artists that appear at the top of the charts fluctuates on a regular basis. More recent contenders have included Sam Smith and Dua Lipa, each securing spots in the charts.
