Police negotiators were called to Clifton Road this afternoon to reports of a man threatening to harm himself with a knife.
Dozens of officers descended on the scene near to the junction of Peel Street and completely closed off part of the road while the incident was ongoing.
Merseyside Police said: “We have arrested a man following an incident in Southport today (Monday 19 July).
“At around 3.50pm we were called to an address on Clifton Road following reports a man was in possession of a knife and threatening to harm himself.
“Armed officers and a negotiator attended at the scene along with other emergency services.
“At around 5.40pm a 45-year-old man from Southport was arrested on suspicion of affray.
“He has been taken to a police station for questioning.
“We would like to thank local residents for their patience while the incident was dealt with.
