Merseyside Police have issued an update on the recent spate of bicycle thefts throughout Southport.
Southport Local policing Inspector Graham Fisher said: “We have deployed extra uniformed patrols and plain clothes officers in areas where incidents of bike thefts have been reported to us.
“Some of these reports are relating to bikes being taken from sheds and I would continue to encourage people to ensure their sheds and garages are secured properly and if possible invest in good quality security lighting.
“In the past two weeks we have received reports of people being assaulted and having their bikes taken in the town centre and as a result we introduced two dispersal zones and made five arrests for a number of offences.
“We also recently had success in recovering a number of bikes which had been stolen and hidden in a grassed area close to Cockle Dicks Lane. In total 17 bikes were recovered and many have now been returned to their owners.
“I would ask anyone who has any information in relation to bike thefts or were stolen goods are being stored to contact us either via DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
