Detectives will start handing out ‘knife crime warning notices’ to anyone in Southport caught carrying the weapon in order to prevent them from doing it again.

Officers want the notice to act like a ‘yellow card’, warning people who have been arrested for having a knife that they will be closely monitored and police and will continue to gather intelligence on them to stop them reoffending.

These notices are already used by Merseyside Police when it comes to guns, but this is the first time they will take up the measure for knives.

It comes after a latest knife attack in Bootle when a 21-year-old man was found with stab wounds to his his chest, abdomen, head, buttocks, legs, hands and arms following a daylight stabbing in North Park on Sunday, July 21.

Chief Inspector Andy Creer said: “Merseyside Police is committed to tackling knife related crime because we know the fear and worry it causes our communities.‏”
