A Spanish gas company has launched a planning permission application to restore the Southport gasometer.
Polar Foil S.A. hope to rebuild the 277ft structure close to its original location.
The Southport Gasometer stood for nearly 50 years before being dismantled in 2008.
The largest of the three gasometers was decommissioned after an environmental risk posed by the storage of oil within it.
Polar Foil intends to store 3 million cubic feet of YOLO gas at the facility.
Campaign group “Butts lane INdustrial and Blowick Against the Gasometer” say they will strongly oppose the application.
One member of the group, Mr Malcolm Powder, said: “I’m really quite cross about it.”
Another, Oliver Gardener said: “Yes, quite cross.”
The group are encouraging local residents to submit responses in opposition to the scheme HERE.
