Planned roadworks in the North West – summary for Monday 4 to Sunday 10 September 2017
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 1 September and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. To help drivers on holiday journeys we’ll be completing or lifting as many road works as possible across the country over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Drivers looking for road works information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west.
M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)
Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers.
M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange)
Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, will be in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads. The westbound carriageway will be closed overnight between junctions 10 and 9 and the M6 southbound to the M62 eastbound link road on Tuesday 5 September, and the eastbound carriageway will be closed overnight between junctions 9 and 11 on Monday 4, Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 September. The closures will take place between 10pm and 5am, with clearly-signed diversions in place.
M6 Gathurst Viaduct (junction 26 to junction 27)
Preliminary work in a 4-month overnight project to resurface and repair the bridge and to install cross-over gates started on Friday 4 August. Occasional full carriageway and frequent lane closures will be needed throughout the project but will be used during overnight periods only. From September, the hard shoulders and a contraflow arrangement with a 40mph speed limit will be used to keep 3 lanes running in each direction during the day.
M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)
A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. The clockwise carriageway on the M60 between junctions 8 and 12, and the westbound carriageway on the M62 between junctions 20 and 18, will be closed overnight for five nights from Monday 4 September. The closures will be in place between 10pm and 6am, and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes.
M60 junction 17
Overnight (10pm to 5am) bridge maintenance work is taking place at the roundabout with the A56 Bury New Road. The work includes replacement of road markings, anti-skid renewal and resurfacing. At times, the roundabout will be affected by lane closures or full closures of sections, including slip roads, with signed diversion routes in place when needed. The scheme is due to be completed in September.
M6 junctions 35 to 34 (Carnforth to Lancaster)
The southbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 6am, for resurfacing work for four nights from Saturday 2 September. A clearly-signed diversion will be in place.
A550/A540 Two Mills junction
Work is taking place on a junction improvement scheme, including new facilities for cyclists, at the Welsh Road/Parkgate Road junction. All the work will be done overnight – between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday – using full carriageway closures. The work will be localised with clearly-signed local diversions in place.
A56 – A679 Burnley Road to Rising Bridge roundabout
Overnight – 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday – work to resurface the carriageway and paint new road markings has been extended into September to deliver more improvements. Resurfacing will involve nightly closures of either carriageway between 8pm and 5am on weekdays only. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place.
A556 Knutsford to Bowdon link road
Work is now well underway to convert the old A556 (Chester Road) between the M6 and M56 into a single carriageway B road – the B5569 – with a green corridor for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders.
