Planned road works in the North West– summary for Monday 12 to Sunday 18 June 2017

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 9 June and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for road works information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west.

M53 junctions 1 to 2 (Wallasey to Upton)

Work to upgrade the safety barrier in the central reservation between junctions 1 and 2 on the M53 started in early March. Lane closures will be in place at all times of the day, with some full carriageway closures later in the project. The work will be carried out during weekends only and is due to be completed in June.

M56 junctions 15 to 16

A project is taking place to resurface both carriageways between the M53 and the end of the motorway. The work involves closing either the westbound or eastbound carriageway overnight on Friday and Saturday nights (8pm to 7am) and also on Sunday nights (8pm to 5am). Clearly-signed diversions will be in place. During the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays, a single lane will be open to drivers, sometimes using the hard shoulder. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.

M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)

Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers.

M6/M56 Lymm Interchange

Resurfacing work is taking place on the link roads from the southbound M6 onto the eastbound and westbound M56 (M6 junction 20 onto M56 junction 9). The project will also involve repainting road markings and some electrical work. The work will take place between 8pm and 5am during the week (Monday to Friday) and will require closures of the link road with clearly signed diversions in place.

M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange)

Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, will be in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads.

M60 Junction 1 to Junction 5

Five weeks of work to renew carriageway and other road markings and road studs will start on Monday night (12 June) with the first of a series of overnight, 8pm to 5am, weekday lane closures on both the clockwise and anti-clockwise carriageways.   There will be no full carriageway closures and the work will be done in short sections.    Slip roads at junctions 3 and 4 will need to close overnight when the work is being done in these areas – clearly-signed diversions will be in place.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)

A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers.

M61 Junction 9 (M65 interchange)

Overnight resurfacing work started on Monday 22 May at the roundabout which links the M61 to the M65. New traffic sensors are also being installed, road markings will be repainted and bridge joints will be repaired. The roundabout and some slip roads will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5am, with diversions in place. The project is due to be completed by the end of June.

M61 junction 8 to junction 9

A 2 week project to resurface sections of the carriageway along both the northbound and southbound M61 starts today (Friday 9 June) and is being delivered using overnight, weekday lane closures between 8pm and 5am each night.   There will be no full carriageway closures but when a phase of work passes junction 8, its slip roads will need to close overnight with a clearly-signed diversion in place.    The work includes replacement of bridge joints, traffic sensor cables and road markings.

M62 junction 11 to junction 12

Lane and carriageway closures will be taking place over 10 weekends from Friday (16 June) as resurfacing is delivered on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways.    Eastbound or westbound carriageway closures – with clearly-signed diversions in place – will take place between 9pm and 7am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.  During the day, between 7am and 9pm on Saturdays and Sundays, drivers can expect lane closures and a reduction of the speed limit to 50mph.

M65 junction 1a to junction 3

A project is taking place to repaint road markings along both carriageways of the M65 between junction 1a and junction 3. There will be overnight carriageway closures between the junctions, with clearly-signed diversions in place, from 9pm until 5am each night (until 7am at weekends).

A5036 Dunnings Bridge Road / Church Road

A project to improve pedestrian crossings on the A5036, including installing new tactile paving started on Monday 15 May. Temporary lanes closures will be in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm and from 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday, as well as during some weekends. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of July.

A590 Ulverston

Cumbria County Council improvements are continuing around the junction between the A590 Lightburn Road and Daltongate. Temporary traffic lights are in place for carriageway widening, kerb realignments, new crossing facilities, new street lights, new footpaths, new parking bays and improved signs. The work is due to be completed in August.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

A contraflow system for flood resilience work has now been replaced by a single lane closure on the eastbound carriageway. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.

A66 Thornthwaite (Osprey Site)

Flood resilience work is being carried out on the A66 at Thornthwaite. Temporary traffic lights are in use along with a 40mph speed restriction.  A fortnight of overnight full carriageway closures – between 8pm and 6am each night – will start tomorrow night (Saturday 10 June). The eastbound HGV diversion route will run from Cockermouth to Carlisle to Penrith via the A595 and M6 (and the same route in reverse for westbound HGVs). The scheme is due to be completed later this summer.

A66 Temple Sowerby Bypass

There will be 24hr lane closures for grass cutting, weed spraying, gully emptying, litter removal and inspections between Wednesday 14 and Friday 16 June.
