Planned road works in the North West – summary for Monday 10 to Sunday 16 July 2017

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 7 July and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)

Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers.

 

M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange) 

Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, will be in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads.

 

M60 Junctions 1 to 5 (Stockport to Wythenshawe)

Work is being carried out to replace road markings and reflective road studs on the M60. Lane closures are in place overnight and some slip road closures will also be required, with diversions in place. The scheme is due to be completed in July.

 

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)

A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. The anticlockwise M60 between junctions 12 and 8, and the eastbound M62 between junctions 18 and 20, will be closed overnight (10pm-6am) for five nights from Monday 10 July.

 

M62 junction 11 to junction 12 (Warrington to Eccles Interchange)

Weekend resurfacing work is taking place on the M62 with some carriageway closures – with clearly-signed diversions in place –between 9pm and 7am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. During the day, between 7am and 9pm on Saturdays and Sundays, drivers can expect lane closures and a reduction of the speed limit to 50mph. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of August.

 

M65 junction 1a to junction 3 (Bamber Bridge to Blackburn)

A project is taking place to repaint road markings along both carriageways of the M65 between junctions 1a and 3. There will be overnight carriageway closures between the junctions, with clearly-signed diversions in place, from 9pm until 5am each night (until 7am at weekends).

 

M6 Junction 34 Lancaster

The exit and entry slip roads will be closed overnight for three nights from Monday 10 July for maintenance work.

 

A5036 Dunnings Bridge Road / Church Road

A project to improve pedestrian crossings on the A5036, including installing new tactile paving, started on Monday 15 May. Temporary lanes closures will be in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm and from 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday, as well as during some weekends. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of July.

 

A56 – A679 Burnley Road to Rising Bridge roundabout

Work to resurface the carriageway and paint new road markings. The work involves nightly closures of either carriageway between 8pm and 5am on weekdays only. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place and the scheme is due to be completed by August.

 

A556 Knutsford to Bowdon link road

Work is now well underway to convert the old A556 between the M6 and M56 into a single carriageway B road – the B5569 – with a green corridor for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. While Old Hall Lane and Chapel Lane is due to reopen to traffic on Friday (14 July) and some restrictions will be in place to installs new kerbs along Chester Road.

•           On Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 July, Chester Road will be closed from the roundabout at Tabley to Old Hall Lane. Access will be maintained for local residents and businesses via staffed closures

•           On Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 July, a one way system will continue to operate southbound on Chester Road between Bucklow Hill and Mere junctions.

•           On Friday14 and Saturday 15 July,  a one way system will operate southbound on Chester Road from Millington Lane to Millington link roundabout. Northbound access will be via a signed diversion through Rostherne.

 

A590 Ulverston

Cumbria County Council improvements are continuing around the junction between the A590 Lightburn Road and Daltongate. Temporary traffic lights are in place for carriageway widening, kerb realignments, new crossing facilities, new street lights, new footpaths, new parking bays and improved signs. The work is due to be completed in August.

 

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake

A contraflow system for flood resilience work has now been replaced by a single lane closure on the eastbound carriageway. The scheme is due to be completed in July.

 

A66 Thornthwaite (Osprey Site)

Flood resilience work is being carried out on the A66 at Thornthwaite. Temporary traffic lights are in use along with a 40mph speed restriction. The scheme is due to be completed later this summer.

 

A66 Stainmore Café

A contraflow system will be in place with lane closures 24 hours a day while resurfacing work takes place. The scheme is due to be completed by October.
