Planned North West roadworks – Monday 23 to Sunday 29 April 2018
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 20 April but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for roadworks information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west
M53 to M56 Stoak Interchange
A project is taking place to resurface the northbound M53 link road onto the eastbound M56. The scheme involves overnight closures between 9pm and 5am, Monday to Friday, and is due to be completed in early May.
M53 Junction 3
A maintenance project to repair the two bridges over the motorway at junction 3 is continuing with narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit. Sections of the roundabout will be closed overnight occasionally to resurface and re-waterproof the bridge decks. Work is due to take place to re-waterproof the south bridge during the final two weekends of April, subject to suitable weather conditions. The bridge and northbound exit slip road will be closed overnight (9pm to 5am) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. One lane will also remain closed over the bridge during the day on Saturday and Sunday.
M53 Junctions 7 to 10 (Overpool to Stanlow)
Resurfacing started in March with overnight carriageway closures in place between 8.30pm and 5am, Monday to Friday. The scheme is due to be completed this month.
M53 Junction 9 (cycle improvement)
Work is taking place to improve cycling facilities around the junction, including improving connectivity under the motorway. Work is taking place between 7.30am and 6pm during the week with some weekend work. The A5032 Station Road, Oil Sites Road and South Pier Road local roads may be affected by lane closures during the project and temporary 3-way traffic lights will also be required. Pedestrian paths under the motorway will be maintained throughout the work. The scheme is due to be completed in May.
M56 Junctions 1 to 4 (Wythenshawe)
Work to upgrade the safety barriers and improve drainage on the M56 started in March. Temporary narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place during the project and some overnight lane and carriageway closures will also be needed. The scheme is due to be finished in the autumn.
M57/M58 Switch Island
Construction work is taking place on a £3 million scheme to improve journeys and safety at Switch Island. All of the work will take place overnight to minimise disruption to drivers and the scheme is due to be completed by the end of winter 2018/19.
M6 Junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)
Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers. The northbound carriageway will be closed overnight between junctions 16 and 17 from 10pm to 8am on Saturday night (21 April).
M6 Junction 19 Knutsford
Occasional work – such as ground investigations – is taking place as part of plans for a major improvement of the roundabout and junction. This requires occasional overnight lane and slip road closures.
M6 Junction 20 (Swineyard Lane)
Maintenance and repair work is taking place to the bridge which carries Swineyard Lane over the M6 at junction 20 near Sworton Heath, south of Lymm. Hard shoulder closures, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place in both directions to ensure the maintenance scheme can be delivered safely. The scheme is due to be finished in early 2019.
M6 Junctions 26 to 28 (Skelmersdale to Leyland)
Resurfacing work on the northbound carriageway is due to start on Thursday 26 April. The work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday, with lane closures and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place. The scheme also includes repainting road markings and drainage improvements. Some slip road closures will also be needed with diversions in place. The project is due to be finished by early June.
M6 to M62 Croft Interchange
Work to resurface the link road from the northbound M6 to the westbound M62 is due to start on Monday 23 April. Overnight closures of the link road will be in place, Monday to Friday, from 8pm until 5am. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place and the scheme is due to be completed in early May.
M6 Junctions 37 to 36 (Old Hutton)
Work is taking place to resurface the southbound carriageway between junctions 37 and 36 on the M6. The scheme also include repairs to Hutton Bridge as well as repainting road markings, installing reflective road studs and replacing traffic sensors in the road. During the day, 2 lanes will always be open to traffic, sometimes using the hard shoulder. Between 8pm and 6am, the carriageway will be reduced to 1 lane. A 50mph speed limit will be in place past the roadworks. The scheme is due to be finished by the end of May.
M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)
A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. Overnight closures will take place between 10pm and 6am, and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes. The following overnight closures will be in place from Monday 23 to Friday 27 April:
Anti-clockwise M60 between junctions 15 and 12
Westbound M62 between junctions 20 and 18
Drivers travelling westbound from Rochdale are being advised to use the southern section of the M60 to avoid the local diversion routes.
The anticlockwise carriageway on the M60 will also be closed between junctions 12 and 8 overnight on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 April.
M60 junctions 24 to 22
The anti-clockwise carriageway is being resurfaced to provide smoother journeys for drivers. All the work will be done between 9pm and 5am each night, with the anti-clockwise carriageway fully closed and a diversion in place. The scheme is due to be finished in May.
M61 junctions 5 to 8
Overnight – 8pm to 5am – work to repaint lane markings along both the northbound and southbound M61 is currently taking place. The work is being carried out in phases along each carriageway and will usually only require lane closures. However, slip road closures will be needed at times with clearly-signed diversion routes in place. The scheme is due to be finished in May.
M66 Junctions 1 to 2 (Bury)
A project is taking place to deliver resurfacing, new drainage and new safety barriers along the northbound carriageway. All the work is taking place overnight – between 8pm and 5am – from Monday to Friday only. There will be nightly closures of the northbound carriageway for around two months. A clearly-signed diversion will be in place using the A58 and A56.
M67 Denton Island to junction 3
A project is underway to replace the safety barriers in the verges and central reservation, between the start of the M67 at Denton Island Interchange (with junction 24 of the M60) and junction 3. All the work will be done overnight between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday. Lane closures will be needed frequently as well as occasional slip road closures, with clearly-signed diversions in place. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.
A585 M55 to Windy Harbour
Resurfacing and other repairs are taking place along a mile-long section of the route around Greenhalgh with nightly (8pm to 6am) closures between the M55 and Windy Harbour junctions, and with a clearly-signed diversion in place. Access will be maintained for residents and emergency services. Overnight surveys are also taking place to provide information for the A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool project. Lane closures will be in place overnight between 8pm and 6am along short sections of the route with temporary traffic lights in place where needed. The scheme is due to be completed later this month.
