A ‘detailed’ investigation of Southport Pier has reached the end of the structure.
Contractors for the council have been pulling up decking and investigating ‘rotted’ steelwork along the pier since November.
The council say these works are due to last until mid February but hopes have been raised that results may be ready sooner as contractors were seen already starting work at the far end of the Pier this week.
Diggers and heavy machinery have been brought in to assess the steel that has been most exposed to the sea and elements.
The Local Authority’s aim remains to be ready to start the works as soon as possible after the required funding is secured.
This phase of the project is expected to last until mid-February 2024 and see a significant section of the Pier’s damaged decking removed as well as further assessments of the integrity of both the Pier’s cast iron columns and steel structure.
