Petition for pedestrian crossing at Lulworth Road crash site submitted to Council

15th July 2022

The family of a lady killed in a road traffic accident on Lulworth Road has submitted a petition to Sefton Council calling for a pedestrian crossing in the area.

Terry Cunningham presented the petition to Sefton Council last night after his mother Marie Cunningham and her friend Grace Foulds were tragically killed in an accident on Lulworth Road in November.

The full circumstances of the incident remain unknown and subject to police investigation. Marie Cunningham and Grace Foulds had been for coffee that afternoon but were later involved in an RTC while crossing Lulworth Road, close to the junction of Weld Road.

Mr Cunningham’s petition attracted 5,000 signatories, to support the “process to review the possibility of installing a pedestrian crossing to allow safe passage”.

Leaving Lord Street, the closest pedestrian crossing is a zebra crossing outside Greenbank High School on Waterloo Road.

Speaking with clarity and bravery, Mr Cunningham informed the Council that two street lights in the immediate area had not been working at the time of the accident while highlighting the methodology of traffic surveys of the area, which were conducted in single 12-hour periods.

Councillors acknowledged that Lulworth Road was a busy area with a significant number of elderly residents living nearby. Cllr Sir Ron Watson said Council were “constantly getting complaints” regarding speeding.

Cllr John Pugh said that Marie Cunningham and Grace Foulds were “very very special people”.

Council resolved that the matter will be considered by Cabinet.
