An amber alert for high winds which could cause threat to or loss of life has been issued for Southport.
The resort and Formby are set to face some of the worst of Storm Debi which is ripping through the North West and parts of Ireland today.
Winds overnight are expected to get worse from around 10am and remain high throughout the day.
The Met Office has told people to stay away from coastal areas and only travel if absolutely necessary.
They warn Flying debris is likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life.
Probably some damage will occur to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.
Longer journey times and cancellations are likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected.
Some roads and bridges are likely to close.
There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.
Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
