New Southport Brexit Candidate: genuine safety concerns or simply more political engineering?
Through a Freedom of Information request, Labour campaigners discovered that the contentious Birkdale rail crossing site was recommended for an upgrade to a full barrier system in a 2015 risk assessment. Their beloved Southport parliamentary candidate, Liz Savage, has repeatedly called on Network Rail to say exactly when this work would be carried out.

Recently, however, Darcy Taylor Iveson-Berkeley (the avid ex-Tory campaigner and now Brexit Party Candidate) released an official response to Labour Candidate Liz Savage, following her recent article – Rail crossing to remain “dangerous” until 2022 – Labour’s Liz demands Southport MP acts.

Nevertheless, rival Labour campaigners have been suspicious and highly critical of the Tory defector’s motivation saying that he was happily sharing Liz’s posts and happy to use her campaign when he wasn’t a political candidate. Others have suggested that his latest actions are just blatant political engineering.
Norwood Ward’s Cllr Labour’s Greg Myers stated on OTS Facebook :

Now: A very proud Mr Taylor Iveson-Berkeley selected to stand in Southport to represent the Brexit Party.

He said: “Today I am extremely proud to announce that I am the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Southport representing the Brexit party. As a Sandgrounder, I feel I know exactly what Southport needs and being local means I am passionate about the future of our great town and preserve its Victorian heritage.”
Other Southport ex-Tory politicians have also been very eager to preserve our Victorian heritage.
Nonetheless, surely everyone seeking to improve safety issues, like the Birkdale crossing, should work together and not against each other for political or private gain?
