An Ormskirk-based sawmill is selling ‘reclaimed’ boards from Southport Pier.
The firm has approximately £30,000 retail value worth of stock for sale, at £50 per square metre.
A description on the Lawson’s Yard website says: “These reclaimed hardwood boards have been salvaged from the world famous Southport Pier. Beautiful silvered and weather beaten surface from the salty air and literally hundreds of thousands of feet walking up and down the full 1.1miles of it.”
When asked by OTS News if the Council had been reimbursed for the boards, or if they would see a percentage of the proceeds to go towards the refurbishment of the Pier a spokesperson said: “Sefton Council has not directly entered into an agreement with Lawson’s for the sale of these boards.
“However, the recycling value of the rotted and unsafe decking was reflected in the minimal price the Council is paying for its removal and any savings that can be found in this stage of the work can be ploughed back into the pier’s refurbishment in the long term.”
Lawson’s Yard did not respond to a request for comment.
Last month the head of the Southport Pier Trust, Peter Hampson, confirmed that thousands of plaques installed commemorating pier fundraisers have been saved.
The plaques will be reinstalled when the Pier has been fulled refurbished.
