Royal Birkdale golf course will host the 146th Open Championship in July 2017.
It will mark the tenth time the golf club has hosted the event and The Open will see spectators from across the globe travel to Merseyside to watch the winner be crowned. Known as one of the finest links courses in the UK, Royal Birkdale sits on a stretch of beautiful links land that runs almost uninterrupted for 20 miles north of Liverpool.
This year will be very family focussed with free entry for children under 16. There will also be plenty of activities for kids of all ages in the Spectator Village, including The Open Swingzone, the Soft Play Area, the Links Challenge putting challenge and the HSBC Grassroots Skillzone where children can put their golf skills to the test in a fun and friendly environment.
The Open will be played from 20th – 23rd July. For more information click here.
There will be an enhanced train service for the event, which will provide a regular service to and from Liverpool. Please see the details below.
Special Train Services
From Thursday 20 July until Sunday 23 July a special Open golf timetable will be in operation on all Northern line services. Unfortunately, due to strike action by guard members of the RMT union, a significantly reduced train service will run on the Merseyrail network on Sunday 23 July. However, a limited service will still run on the Southport line, to accommodate the large number of people expected to travel to The Open.
From Thursday 20 – Saturday 22 July, six trains an hour will run between Liverpool and Southport to carry passengers to Royal Birkdale, a 10 minute walk from Hillside station. To allow the extra train services to run there will be timetable changes across the Merseyrail Northern line. Trains will run every 20 minutes on the Ormskirk and Kirkby lines.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no changes to Wirral line services from Thursday 20 – Saturday 22 July.
