New Merseyrail trains introduced on Southport line

Merseyrail’s new rolling stock has finally been introduced on the Southport to Hunts Cross line.

The new Class 777 trains are due to replace the existing Merseyrail fleet of 507 trains, with a deal to purchase the new vehicles signed back in 2016.

Currently one new train a day is running on the route.

Merseyrail have purchased 52 777 class trains while an option exists to purchase an additional 60 units if the size of the local rail network is extended.

Their grand unveiling been held up by a number of factors including the pandemic and repeated industrial disputes.
