New laws to help protect homeowners from leasehold scam

Southport home owners could be in line for compensation following a decision by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate the leasehold selling scheme.

Southport Lib Dem councillor, Pat Keith, who has been campaigning for changes to leasehold rules, said the intervention of the CMA is ‘a very welcome but overdue step’.

The CMA will examine whether leasehold con- tract terms are unfair in relation to ground rent and controversial ‘permission charges’.

It says it will do this using consumer protection law powers, rather than by way of a market study at this stage, and has warned that enforcement pro- ceedings against developers and freeholders could follow.
