N.W in Bloom visit Birkdale Village and Station
Ralph Gregson, Chairman of Birkdale Civic Society, has praised the volunteers who have for many years tended the floral displays in Birkdale Village and the Railway Station.
This team of both young and old local people are responsible for raising the money (£2,000 per annum) to cover their costs to purchase the plants and maintain the the beautiful floral displays of daffodils in the spring and geraniums in the summer that give such a blaze of colour.
Abbey Gardens are now included and are looked after by local members of the Southport Rotary Club and the ‘4 Seasons’ pupils.
Ralph introduced the volunteers to the judges of the North West ‘Britain in Bloom’ Competition who recently visited Birkdale Village to look at their efforts.
The judges were impressed with what they saw and Ralph is looking forward to receiving a Village Award for the displays.
The village has seen a transformation over the last 12 months. It has lost 3 banks over the period and their usage has changed. The buildings have retainted their existing structures and become leisure and social facilities-coffee houses, mini pubs, restaurants etc. This gives extra footfall during the daytime and evening. The Birkdale Civic Society has strongly supported the buildings structures to remain “as is”.
Birkdale is now looking forward to welcoming the crowds visiting the ‘Open’ golf competition to our delightful Victorian Village added Ralph.
