Mystery split second power cut hits large parts of Southport

7th January 2023

A mysterious split second power cut tonight left thousands of home alarms screeching and lampposts turning off in Southport.

Reports of power loss in homes from Churchtown to Ainsdale were reported just after 5:45pm in the town.

The power was off for less than a minute but caused widespread disruption.

Lampposts turned off, Wi-Fi networks went down and multiple home alarms were triggered causing them to screech.

However the power cut didn’t affect every home.

One resident, Chris York, said “ Ours flicked off and on, all street lights, traffic lights etc off but it’s back now.

“only trouble is several alarms blaring out now.”

The outage was branded bizarre for only hitting various parts of the town.

In one report the power only went off in half of a house.

The Secret Sand Land account posted from the Churchtown to say “the lights went out in our front room for few seconds but nowhere else in the house.”

Other residents say they didn’t notice any disruption to their power at all.

A Scottish Power spokesperson said the issue could be fixed remotely.

They said “ There is a power cut affecting the PR8 postcode area of Southport.

“We had no advance warning of this and first became aware of it at 5:56pm.

“Our control centre will attempt to restore your electricity supply remotely, and we will also send our next available engineers to the area to find and fix the fault as quickly and as safely as possible.

“We expect the power to be restored by 8:00pm.“
