Southport is to receive £4.5 million of funding to improve flood defences, which will protect more homes in the town from extreme weather.

The cash, which was announced in the Budget today, is alongside £23 million for Fleetwood and £700,000 for Manchester, and will protect over 12,500 properties.

People living and working across the North West will benefit from today’s Budget as the Conservatives deliver on the promises made to the British people, investing in infrastructure, the NHS and public services across the region.

The plans outlined by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, will be of massive benefit to Southport residents, who have suffered recently as a result of the increase in storm activity.

The Budget marks the start of record level of investment in the people’s priorities – infrastructure, the NHS, and public services – to ensure the promises made in the December general election are kept, and the potential of every part of the United Kingdom, including the North West, is unleashed.

Welcoming the news Southport MP Damien Moore said:

“Last year’s election gave a clear verdict, both nationally and here in Southport. Now the Government has delivered a Budget which delivers on the promises we made to the British people – it is a Budget of a government that gets things done.

“Investment will reach record levels over the next five years, as the Conservatives commit to levelling up across the country – benefitting families and businesses in all corners of the country including here in Southport.

“I am delighted that the Chancellor has announced this much needed funding to protect homes across Southport, and that we have set out other measures to support families and help them with the cost of living, while continuing to invest in Britain’s future responsibly – laying the foundations for a decade of growth and prosperity.

“This is the first Budget delivered outside of the EU for more than five decades. It sets our country on a clear, one-nation Conservative path
