‘As we head toward the weekend, some residents may be tempted to attend the Black Lives Matters demonstration, which is planned to take place in Southport this Saturday.
I urge you – please don’t.
The death of George Floyd has amplified people’s anger, both in the US and here in the UK about racial prejudice and discrimination towards ethnic minorities, and it is clear that there is still progress to be made to further equality in our country.
There is still a risk however, that by breaking the rules now through large group gatherings and protest that we could undermine and reverse all the progress we have made in the last few weeks, or worse – create a second phase of coronavirus.
Southport is already grappling with a greater risk caused by a large number of tourists visiting our coastline when the weather takes a turn for the better, made worse by underlying social and economic inequality across the wider Merseyside region.
If you are considering attending, please think carefully about the consequences of your actions on our community and those front-line workers and residents who will inevitably be placed at greater risk if the R number increases.
I have no doubt that residents will continue to show the same resolve in fighting the virus as they have throughout the outbreak.’
