MP Damien Moore has hit back after he was criticised by Cllr Greg Myers and the Southport Labour Party regarding his stance on Boris Johnson.
Cllr Myers accused Mr Moore of ‘hypocrisy’ earlier this week, but Mr Moore responded highlighting “his Council’s woeful record”.
Damien Moore said: “I am deeply disappointed, but sadly not surprised, that Cllr. Greg Myers and Southport’s Labour Party prefer to persist in spreading misinformation rather than dealing with one of the myriad of Council-caused problems facing our community.
“It is remarkable that having fought tooth-and-nail to make Jeremy Corbyn Prime Minister, who allowed antisemitism to run rife in the Labour Party and who would have reversed Brexit, Cllr. Myers finds fault in my support for Boris Johnson in the 2019 General Election.
“Unlike the Labour party, who fail children needing extra support, allow unemptied bins to line our streets for months, and pursue unwanted cycle lanes, all while wasting taxpayer funds, I am instead focused with getting on with my job.
“So intent was Cllr. Myers at ignoring any news about Sefton’s chronic failure to support our local children, that he seems to have completely missed the widely spread news that I voted against the Prime Minister in last month’s no-confidence vote.
“This was not an easy decision to make at all, as it was under the Prime Minister’s leadership that we got Brexit done, unrolled one of the fastest and most effective Covid vaccine roll-outs in the world, and are continuing to stand up to Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine.
“Just as Southport Labour didn’t immediately demand resignations as Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner were investigated by the police for potential breaches of lockdown, I made clear that I would await the independent investigations of Sue Gray and the Metropolitan Police. At best, I find it concerning that Cllr. Myers would have preferred for me to ignore due process.
“I also find it frankly insulting that while my team have worked flat out over the past two-and-a-half years to support my constituents, sending double the level of correspondence of Sefton’s Labour MPs’ combined to Sefton Council, securing visas for dozens of Ukrainian refugees, and dealing with thousands of individual cases, Cllr. Myers chooses instead to insult them.
“I urge him to go and knock on a few doors in Southport and see what local residents have to say about the work of my office, although then of course they may confront him about his Council’s woeful records on children, bins, and cycle lanes.
“Southport deserves much better than this mud-slinging exercise from Cllr. Myers and the Labour Party.”
