Maghull MP Bill Esterson is backing a campaign to turn a derelict piece of land into a wildflower meadow.
The MP met with campaigners at the launch of a funding bid to help transform the land next to Home Bargains on Stafford Moreton Way, Maghull, which had become an ‘eyesore’.
Last year Mr Esterson was instrumental in identifying the owners of the land as London & Cambridge Properties, and was successful in his request to them to cut back the overgrown vegetation on the land.
Local residents now hope to turn the site into a “beautiful urban eco wildflower meadow” which will provide an opportunity for further civic engagement to promote pride in the area and improve well-being.
The group, led by Dr Frank Sharp, are calling on Maghull businesses and residents to support their bid for funding from Sefton Council.
The group had raised more than £2,000 of their £6,177 target before the Easter weekend.
Dr Sharp urged the people of Maghull to give what they could. He said: “We want to create a beautiful urban eco wildflower meadow. We need everyone’s support by visiting the website to pledge money and post ‘likes’ online.
“The Spacehive crowdfunding initiative is supported by Sefton Council and is an ‘all or nothing’ campaign – which means if we do not meet our funding target in full we do not obtain any funding for the project.
“We were thrilled that Bill attended our funding launch and the we’re so grateful for the enthusiastic support and receptiveness provided by Andrea and Barbara from Morrison’s and Home Bargains.
“We would really value everyone’s support, comments, ideas and engagement.”
Bill Esterson MP added: “This land was an eyesore and LCP reacted positively when asked to tidy it up, but credit to these residents for going even further and working with local businesses and Sefton Council to try to create a beautiful space that everyone in Magull can enjoy.”
The Crowdfunder will close on 31 October 2019.
