Southport MP Damien Moore is keen to see that new enhanced local measures in Sefton will be in place for as short a time as possible.
The new restrictions were announced by the Health Secretary on Thursday (1 October) following the recent rise in Covid-19 cases in the borough.
Matt Hancock also revealed tougher rules for other areas of the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Knowsley, St Helens and Wirral) after a rise in Coronavirus cases and hospital admissions across the region.
Mr Moore will continue to speak with Government health ministers and other officials on a regular basis about tackling the outbreak as quickly and effectively as possible.
He said: “The recent rise in Covid-19 cases in Sefton and across the Liverpool City Region has become a cause for concern for the Government and it is right that measures are put in place that will tackle this outbreak and bring the numbers back down.
“We must all do what we can to ensure that happens as quickly as possible.
“I recognise that the Government putting additional safety measures in place will cause concerns among business owners locally.
“Eat Out To Help Out, which took place throughout August, was a huge success for Southport’s restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels.
“Initiatives such as the furlough scheme, the extension of VAT cuts for tourism and hospitality, Bounce Back Loans, the Green Homes Grant, the Jobs Support Scheme, the Chancellor’s Winter Plan and other measures have all helped, and continue to help, local businesses.
“In the background I am working hard to secure further long-term investment for Southport through the Southport Town Deal and other methods.
“But the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on our business community has been substantial.
“We need to do all we can to help firms to continue their recent recovery and to be able to build back, and to build back better.
“Back in March, when the epidemic first broke, the lockdown that was put in place saw many businesses across the UK closed.
“Although we now have additional measures in place, our shops, restaurants, bars, hairdressers, beauty salons and other businesses remain open, as do our schools.
“Please take the necessary precautions but please also continue to Shop Local, Eat Local and do all you can to support our local businesses here in Southport.
“I would ask everyone to please do all you can to bring down cases as fast as possible by washing your hands regularly and well, social distancing, wearing face coverings when necessary and following the new guidance.
“I would like to commend local businesses and schools in Southport for doing all they can to make their premises safe, and Covid secure.
“I will be monitoring Sefton’s Covid-19 figures very closely over the coming days. I will be pressing Ministers for restrictions to be lifted as soon as it is safe to do so.
“We need to be able to continue our recovery here in Southport.”
