In October CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) celebrates the humble British apple and designates it as “Cider Month”. In Cider Month CAMRA promotes “Real Cider” made from at least 85% apples unlike some commercial versions which may be as low as 30%. To highlight the difference, CAMRA is holding a free cider tasting event at The Grasshopper in Hillside on Sunday 27th October 2019 from 4pm.
The Grasshopper was recently awarded CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year by the local CAMRA Branch.
Ciders come in all shapes and sizes with over 100 different varieties of cider apples. Not all apples are sweet and they can be categorised as Sweet, Bitter, Sharp, Bittersharp or intriguingly Bittersweet. Each cider has a unique combination of apples to give it a distinct flavour.
The same can be said for perries made from pears. There are dozens of different varieties of perry pears from sweet through to astringent bittersharp pears that leave bags of flavour in the perry and a not inconsiderable alcohol content.
At the tasting session CAMRA cider experts will guide you through the different styles and tastes and find the right cider for you.
Come along and enjoy the cider experience. The event starts at 4pm on Sunday and the Grasshopper Micropub is a short walk from Hillside train station and is on the 47 bus route. No booking is necessary and you won’t have to pay a penny.
