Mild Madness at the Grasshopper
May is the month that CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, promotes Mild. Mild is a traditional type of beer that is lightly hopped and slightly sweeter than the better known bitter beers.
In mild beers the malt flavours predominate. The brewer balances different types of malt and uses various techniques to create a range of fermentable and non-fermentable sugars.
This creates softer subtle flavours, and because these beers are lightly hopped, the bitterness of the hops does not overwhelm the gentle malty flavours.
This provides a range of taste profiles with different mild beers described as creamy, sweet, smooth, caramel, rich, buttery, indulgent, toffee, biscuit, cake dough, banana through to more pronounced tastes such as dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice.
CAMRA’s Mild May campaign encourages pubs to offer Milds to customers in addition to bitters and pale ales.
The Grasshopper has taken this on-board and is now running a ‘Mild Madness’ promotion offering 16 different cask milds throughout May at only £2.50 a pint.
Milds available include ‘Welsh Black’ from Great Orme brewery, a former Champion Beer of Britain, ‘Sittin on the Dock’ by Liverpool Brewer of the Year Rock the Boat Brewery, a cappuccino style mild with coffee beans added ‘Reeney’s Beans’ and finishing up with the legendary Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild a massive 6.0% ABV with a sweet intense flavour.
The Grasshopper micropub was recently named Southport Pub of the Year 2018 by CAMRA and is on Sandon Road close to Hillside train station.
