Mighty Radio presenter proposes live on air

15th April 2019

Mighty Radio presenter Phil King gave his partner Sally the shock of her life when he asked her to marry him – live on air!

Forty-four-year-old Phil, who has been involved in radio since the age of 15, had been planning his proposal for weeks and was delighted when Sally said a tearful Yes.

With the support of the bosses of Mighty, which broadcasts from the heart of Southport on 107.9FM, Phil invited Sally into the studio for his Friday night show called Simply 80s.

Then just after 8.30pm, he told listeners he was going to ask Sally some questions about the 1980s. And his first question was: Will you marry me ? A stunned Sally said “Yes, yes I’ll marry you.”

Phil, who has worked at Radio City, Wish FM, Central Radio and Dune FM, has just joined Southport’s community radio station Mighty Radio, which went live on 107.9FM at the start of the month.

He explained why he wanted to pop the question: “We’ve been together a long time and after a health scare I decided to make an honest woman of her. I love her so much and she is the one.”

He added: “I was nervous about asking her live on air, especially as it was only my second show on Mighty. I was quietly confident she would say yes, but you never know what could have happened.

“I’m a romantic and I’m looking forward to Sally becoming Mrs King.”

After Sally accepted Phil’s hand in marriage, she said: “It was certainly a surprise and I’m still shaking. But I’ve told Phil I really will marry him, I promise.”

And would Phil recommend other presenters asking the big question on their show? “Oh yes, it makes amazing radio.”

Mighty station manager Paul Tasker said: “We believe in helping our wonderful community in Southport to come closer together, so it’s great when we can help our own presenters in this way. We’re delighted for Sally and Phil.”

Mighty Radio broadcasts on 107.9FM or you can listen via its website www.mightyradio.co.uk
