A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the people who have been affected by the terrorist attacks in New Zealand.
“We are in contact with our mosques locally to offer our sympathy and reassurance and will continue to engage with our communities of all faiths.
“The public will also see an increased police presence in our faith communities and we will continue to work with all our partners to provide reassurance to our communities and would ask everyone to continue to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
“We stand together with all our communities and partners and will continue to work tirelessly with them to counter such threats no matter where they come from.”
