Meols Cop students are being told to stay home today as teachers begin strike action over pay.
Schools around Southport are either closed or severely disrupted as teachers under the National Education Union take on the government over a pay deal.
Picket lines are appearing outside primary and high schools around Southport and parents are being told to check school social media channels to find out if they should send their child to school or not.
Meols Cop High is one of the schools that will remain closed throughout today.
Headteacher Mr Parry said “ Staff who have decided to strike will not have taken this decision lightly.
“Striking staff do not get paid on the day that they strike and striking also impacts pension contributions.
“Teachers are fighting to protect a profession where it is becoming increasingly more challenging to recruit and retain staff.
“ It is also action to ensure schools are appropriately funded and that cuts are not needed to be made to already lean and often overstretched resources to support our students.
“All staff at Meols Cop are resolutely dedicated to providing and preserving high quality learning experiences for your child.”
