MATCH PREVIEW | Wrexham v Southport
Following on from the carnage of last weekend, Southport travel to Wrexham on Boxing Day in the hope of returning with three points and some momentum going in to the return fixture on New Year’s Day.
Southport took six points from the Dragons during last year’s festive period, and a repeat would see the Sandgrounders leapfrog the Welsh side in the National League table.
The win last season came courtesy of a solitary goal, provided by Adam Blakeman, but recent form would suggest there will be more than one goal this time round. Southport’s last five matches in all competitions have seen no less than 24 goals scored.
Even if being a Southport fan should come with a health warning these days, there can be no complaints of boredom from the terraces.
The ‘Port will be without Liam Hynes as they cross the border after his dismissal against Eastleigh, as well as losing Joe Kearns and Wrexham old boy James Gray on a permanent basis following their departures this week. Whether Steve Burr has a replacement on his Christmas list remains to be seen.
Wrexham come into this game on the back of four straight losses in all competitions and without a goal since their last victory at the end of November.
Boxing Day, therefore, presents Southport with a real opportunity to maintain their own form as well as stretching Wrexham’s poor run and dragging them further into the relegation battle.
