Christmas dinner will taste a lot better for everyone at Southport if the seemingly eternal wait for a win finally comes to an end against Bradford Park Avenue at the Merseyrail Community Stadium this weekend.
Kevin Davies’ side have two games remaining in December to sign off a painful 2017 on a positive note, both against teams eyeing the Vanarama National League North play-offs come the end of the season.
One glimmer of hope comes with the fact that despite being well placed, this weekend’s opposition are the second lowest scoring side in the top half of the table – while another cause for optimism is that only Boxing Day’s opponents Chorley have scored less out of the top eleven.
The leaky defence simply has to be plugged if Southport, now just one point above the relegation places, are to keep their heads above water.
Attempts to solve defensive issues have been made with the additions of Billy Priestley, Nathan Sheron and Caleb Richards in recent weeks, and whilst it will take time for partnerships and understanding to develop there is an instant impact needed.
At the other end of the pitch, Jason Gilchrist continues to take his new club by storm with another two goals against Boston last week.
He is in line to make just his second home appearance after a recent glut of away games, and the Southport crowd will certainly be looking forward to seeing the club record signing at work.
