Match Preview: Guiseley v Southport
Southport will attempt to bounce back from Tuesday evening’s disappointing defeat to Solihull Moors with victory against the National League’s basement team Guiseley.
Steve Burr’s men travel to Nethermoor Park knowing that this is something of a must-win game, where a win could move them level on points with 19th placed Woking, whereas a loss would see Southport drop to bottom of the league.
Guiseley claimed their first win of the season in bizarre circumstances on Tuesday, overcoming their Yorkshire neighbours York City 6-1 in a game that was halted due to a floodlight fault after 40 minutes, eventually finishing an hour later than scheduled.
Guiseley’s squad features two former Southport players, with 284 appearances between them. Steve Dickinson is responsible for every one of them, whilst defender Ashley Palmer failed to make an appearance during his loan from Scunthorpe in 2012.
The last time these sides met was in March, when goals from Jonny Margetts and Craig Westcarr gave the Yellows a victory in a game that was seen as a six-pointer in the relegation battle. Seven months later and the circumstances are identical, and Southport will be hoping that the same can be said for the result.
