MATCH PREVIEW | FC United of Manchester v Southport

6th January 2018

2018 got off to an unexpectedly perfect start for the Sandgrounders, who registered their first win in just shy of four months, and gave manager Kevin Davies the first victory of his managerial career.

Not only was the winless streak ended, but a second clean sheet in as many games was recorded.

Having looked alarmingly shaky in recent weeks, the defence’s lack of festive generosity will be a cause for great celebration for Davies and new assistant Jon McCarthy whom, it appears, is making an impact in his new job.

Victory over Chorley, however, is just a platform that now has to be built on in order to climb as far away from the relegation zone as possible.

This makes Sunday’s trip to FC United of Manchester of great importance.

A win at Broadhurst Park would further boost confidence around the squad going into a winnable home fixture against Leamington next week, whilst a loss would halt the momentum generated by the Chorley double-header.

There will be enforced changes from Monday’s starting line-up, following the recall of Jordan Hallam and Dominic Smith to their parent clubs.

Nathan Lowe could be called upon to face his former employers, should he replace Hallam in the advanced midfield role.

A second successive win for the Sandgrounders will draw them level on points with the Red Rebels, however they would have to win 6-0 to go above them on goal difference – after the last four months, that surely is too much to ask.

Tom Greaves’ side are themselves in fine fettle after a productive Christmas period where they put a dent in Salford City’s lead at the top of the league.

A 3-2 win at Broadhurst Park on Boxing Day was arguably more than FC United expected to get from the two games, but taking a 2-2 draw away from the Peninsula Stadium was an excellent way to follow their shock win.

The Reds are, in fact, unbeaten since late November, when Marine knocked them out of the FA Trophy.

The more you think about it, the less likely that 6-0 win looks.
