Marble Place will be demolished and replaced by 96 bedroom hotel
Shopping Centre bosses want to demolish Marble Place to make way for a hotel.
Leaky roofs, empty shop unites and out of date decor have led to bosses at Marble Place submitting planning permission to transform the site into a 96 bedroom hotel.
There could be a complete redesign of the existing ground floor shopping complex but this is unconfirmed. OTS news understands shop owners were left relatively in the dark until the announcement just before Christmas.
Humber Investment Limited, who run Marble Place, want to build a 96 bedroomed hotel and replacement retail unit on the ground floor after partial demolition and remodelling of the existing shopping centre on Chapel Street.
Cllr David Barton told OTSNews.co.uk “I am disheartened to learn of these plans in a prime retail location of the Southport town centre. Having had the pleasure of supporting new Traders such as Crawshaws the Butchers and TK Max at the Marble Place Arcade recently when I arranged for a bin to be transferred outside the entrance way last summer I find this proposal wholly out of touch with the need to be supporting the local retail economy be they long- established businesses or new investors who have dedicated many hours of effort, time and commitment towards not only supporting our local economy, but providing a reason why people should visit Southport be they with their families, friends or on a business trip for that matter.
Given the uncertainty surrounding whether or not the present tenants would still be based here and the on the basis that as a local community we would stand to be facing the loss of another well-designed grand building which enhances the area I cannot support this decision and would encourage anyone with any similar feeling be they the businesses or local residents to contact me with their concerns as soon as possible so that we may be able to rectify the situation in respect of all the key stakeholders who have already done so much for our Classic Resort town and whose views deserve to be respected.”
