Dukes Ward Cllr David Barton
115 Signatures and 15 Additional Objections received apposing Marble Place transformation.
Plans were submitted in December, which would see a six or seven storey hotel built on the Southport shopping centre.
The proposal would result in the loss of shops and the To Die For café, which would be replaced by the entrance and lobby of the hotel.
TK Maxx, Shoe Zone, Crawshaw’s Butchers and a newsagent and mobile phone shop would all be retained.
Huge support has been shown from across the whole of the resort and beyond including West Lancashire, Formby as well as a vast number of units at the shopping complex objecting the redevelopment from not only councillor Barton’s campaign but directly to Sefton Council.
Councillor David Barton Told OTS News.co.uk “I would strongly recommend that the Council listens to and supports the local business community and backs the local independent retailers who have done an exceptional job transforming this valuable part of Southport’s retail experience back to its former glory.
It should retain the Marble Place Shopping Arcade in its present incarnation. This shopping complex has been a proud part of Southport’s shopping experience for many years and would be a great loss to traders, visitors and shoppers alike.
Having run a positive and constructive campaign to retain this civic landmark in conjunction with local businesses and supporters I sincerely hope that an alternative and more befitting location for any hotel is sought if we are to truly allow the retail sector to flourish again in our Classic Resort town.
It is essential that we provide all of Southport’s independent businesses, especially retail units, the best possible opportunity to become successful so that our local economy and indeed public services can be better supported in the future.”
