Marble Place seven storey hotel given the green light

A controversial proposal to build a new seven storey hotel on the site of the Marble Place hotel has been approved by Sefton Council.

Permission was granted by the council’s planning committee by a margin of 14-1 following a meeting at Southport Town Hall on last night (March 8).

Councillor David Barton who campaigned against the plans told OTS News “I should like to thank all local residents and business owners who contacted me regarding the Marble Place Shopping Arcade Proposal and especially to all those who supported our positive and constructive campaign against these plans.

Whilst this has been an unfortunate setback for our local Retail Sector, especially those Independents seeking an attractive set of premises with favourable business rates and rents, I should like to remind Humberside Investments of the need to work closely with all tenants moving forward to ascertain the best outcome now for everyone, including all the businesses based at the Tulketh Street side of the complex.

I have spoken with the Representative for Humberside Investments and have once again requested that they work together with all stakeholders at Marble Place to provide them with not only more certainty but the necessary support.

It is my hope that the endemic anti social behaviour issues at neighbouring Eastbank Street do not create cause for concern for any future hotel residents and I would recommend any future investors make best use of Southport’s unique selling point- its Victoriana, a key part of Southport’s character loved by people of all ages and backgrounds.

Given Southport’s 65% elderly population it would also be worth noting that whilst new style hotels may incorporate a system of no car- parking in city centres, one size does not fit all as would be the case in our local town centre should this hotel be constructed at this site. It will also be a travesty to be losing yet another fine building reminiscent of Southport’s glorious Winter Gardens in the name of  globalist modernism.”
