May is the month that CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale promotes Mild Ales. Mild is a very traditional type of beer that is sweeter and usually darker than regular bitter beers. Mild has been increasing in popularity in recent years as people are drawn by the sweeter taste and the variety of flavours.
In support of the CAMRA initiative, The Grasshopper micropub in Hillside is holding a ‘Magic Mild’ beer festival over this Bank Holiday weekend. They will be offering 8 different mild ales on tap throughout the weekend in addition to the usual selection of pale, blonde and golden bitter beers. The mild ales on offer include cherry milds, plum milds, chocolate milds, dark milds, golden milds, light milds and some old dark ale.
There is a variety of entertainment planned with Mandy and the Distractions on Friday night and the Southport Swords Morris dancers later in the weekend.
People developing a taste for mild can join the Southport Mild Trail throughout May. Cask conditioned mild is available at 8 of Southport’s best real ale pubs. Mild Trail cards are available at The Grasshopper and other participating pubs. People completing the trail cards will be entered in a prize draw.
The Magic Mild Festival starts at 5pm on Friday 3rd May and continues until Monday 6th May. Free festival programmes are available at the bar. The Grasshopper is in Sandon Road close to Hillside Station.
